An epidemiological study of reproductive failure in dairy herds from Goiânia Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Andrade,J.R.A.; Silva,N.; Silveira,W.; Teixeira,M.C.C..
An epidemiological study was carried out on 2823 cows from 34 dairy herds from Goiania in the State of Goias-Brazil during 2001 to 2002. The pregnancy rate was 47.8%. In 1473 non-pregnant cows, causes of reproductive failure problems were sought. The most prevalent uterine infection was endometritis (17.0%). Uterine disorders such as partial hypoplasia of the genital system (0.04%), macerate fetus (0.01%), adhesion of ovaries (0.04%), stillbirth (0.04%), retained placenta (0.01%), cervix inflammation (0.6%) and abortion (0.88%) also were found. Uterine swabs were collected aseptically for microbiological culture. Gram positives cocci (41.3%) and Gram negatives rods (52.6%) were found, and Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were the most prevalent...

An outbreak of winter dysentery caused by bovine coronavirus in a high-production dairy cattle herd from a tropical country BABT
Takiuchi,Elisabete; Barry,Aline Fernandes; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes; Filippsen,Patrícia; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is a known cause of winter dysentery (WD) in adult cattle. The morbidity of the disease is high, that results in a significant decrease in milk production and consequently, economic losses. In the present study, we report on a classical outbreak of WD that affected a high-production Holstein dairy herd raised in a tropical country. The lactating batch included 154 cows, and 138 (90%) presented diarrhea in a short (nine days) period of time. Three (2%) cows died. The other batches of animals did not become ill. The evolution of the disease in the herd, including the clinical signs and epidemiological features, strongly suggested a WD case. Semi-nested PCR and RFLP confirmed that BCoV was the cause of the infection. Samples tested...

Estimating the abortion risk difference in Neospora caninum seropositive dairy cattle in Brazil Ciência Rural
Nicolino,Rafael Romero; Capanema,Renato Oliveira; Oliveira,Camila Stefanie Fonseca de; Pastrana,Misael Enrique Oviedo; Lopes,Luciano Bastos; Haddad,João Paulo Amaral.
Neosporosis in cattle herds is associated with large economic losses, with abortion being the only clinical sign perceptible to the producer. Losses are estimated at over one billion dollars worldwide. This study aimed to estimate the abortion risk difference in seropositive animals using specific data for dairy herds in Brazil. Differences in the risk of abortion between seropositive and seronegative animals were calculated through a meta-analysis of previous data from several Brazilian states, and an increase of 10.04% (0.091 to 0.118) in the specific risk was identified. This finding indicates that more than 474,000 abortions caused by neosporosis may be occurring only in dairy cattle herds in Brazil, causing a major economic loss in the milk production...

Forecasting dairy herd development in China AgEcon
Wang, Dong; Parton, Kevin A..
With the rapid development of the Chinese dairy industry, various researchers have examined the industry from many perspectives related to supply and demand. One of the most important factors for this industry is the total number of dairy cows and it is this aspect that will be addressed in this paper. This paper examines how economic and biological factors influenced the size of the Chinese dairy herd population using an autoregressive distributed lag model and a dairy herd inventory model. The estimated results showed that the biological process was dominating the development of the Chinese dairy herd. The ratio of milk to corn price, as an economic variable, is another factor that had an impact. Beef price, which was found to be an influential variable...

Prevalence of 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemobos' detected by PCR, in dairy cattle from Ji-Paraná in the north region of Brazil Ciência Rural
Witter,Rute; Melo,Andréia Lima Tomé; Pacheco,Thábata dos Anjos; Meneguzzi,Mirella; Boas,Ricardo Vilas; Dutra,Valéria; Nakazato,Luciano; Chitarra,Cristiane Silva; Oliveira,Anderson Castro Soares de; Pacheco,Richard Campos.
ABSTRACT: The municipality of Ji-Paraná, Rondônia, is one of the major dairy production areas in the north region of Brazil. Thus, it is important to evaluate infectious agents that have the potential to negatively affect productivity in the industry. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of ' Candidatus Mycoplasma haemobos' by using a PCR-based detection method and correlate this with dairy herd variables (abortion frequency, weak calf birth rate, total cattle number, >24-month-old cow number, farm size, and production system) in family farms of the Ji-Paraná municipality, north region, Brazil. Blood samples were collected from 320 dairy cows located across 64 farms (i.e., five animals per farm) from September 2012 to November...
